Weekly Shopping Trip

I did next week's shopping early this week since I had a family funeral today, and my mother was available to watch my son. In all, I spent $40.96. I probably have about $10 worth of soy milk and my husband's birthday pierogies to buy, but $50.96 is pretty good. I will add in an amazon.com purchase of Eight O'clock Coffee that was $15, and I am still within my $70 budget.

Did I mention that with coupons from the newspaper and printed from online, I was able to combine them with Kroger's megasale to get 22 boxes of Ronzoni Smart Taste, Healthy Harvest, and Garden Delight for FREE?

I also combined the megasale price with coupons to get 5 Philadelphia Cooking Creams for $0.49 each. I needed 3 more megasale items, so I got 3 Coke products for $0.89 to be used for my son's birthday party in a couple months.

Weekly Shopping Trips

Kroger Trip: about $41 for food and $4.87 for 1.5L Listerine using stacked coupons. Just about everything else is fresh produce, much of it organic. I'll be going back in the next few days to take advantage of free pasta and $0.49 Philadelphia Cooking Cream at Kroger's Mega Sale.

Health food store trip: About $25. Some organic produce, unsweetened organic soy yogurt for my son's daily snack (I usually add berries), and organic frozen fruit for smoothies that were on sale.

I just discovered that Earth's Best makes soy formula (we discovered our daughter likely has a dairy allergy as well). Usually this is a rather expensive $29.99 per can, but amazon.com currently has a coupon code of EBMARCH4 good through March 31st that will give an additional 5% off the sale price. I used Subscribe and Save for an additional 15% off, to bring the price per 25 oz can to $22. For those of us unable to nurse, but wanting to make sure our child gets an organic formula, subscribe and save on Amazon is a great deal. I get free 2-day shipping through Amazon Mom.

Black Bean Burritos

Today's experimentation in vegetarian eating- black bean burritos. I reduced the amount of oil used to saute the veggies to 1 tsp, added a drained can of mild Rotel tomatoes and chilies (gotten for $0.17 per can), an ounce of cheddar, and about a tsp of cumin. I thought these were great! I made sure to rinse the beans well to reduce the sodium content. This served the two of us, and I'd say the meal was about $2.50 tops.

We will definitely make this again.

Homemade Pizza With Whole Wheat Crust

I made the sauce for this pizza with a $0.25 can of tomato sauce, and added powdered garlic, oregano, and basil.

The recipe
comes from my best friend Val. It has good wheat flavor without being too strong. This pizza wasn't on the menu for tonight, but I had leftover peppers from the veggie wraps, and provolone cheese that was going to expire in a day or so that I didn't want to go to waste.

The dough took 90 minutes in my bread machine, and it took 20 minutes to cook.

The end result- scrumptious!

Roasted Veggie Wraps

This Veggie Wrap turned out very, very well. Definitely on the regular rotation list again. I roasted some zucchini, summer squash, red onion, a minced garlic clove, and half a red and yellow bell pepper with a small drizzle of olive oil, pepper, and dried basil. I heated the tortilla in the microwave for 20 seconds to soften it, then put a couple ounces sharp cheddar down the center, loaded some veggies on, then a couple tablespoons of guacamole. I used pre-made guac this time, but will make my own next time. I also think I will try to find a lower calorie tortilla, or experiment with making my own. This was full of flavor!

Weekly Shopping Trip

My Kroger trip for this week: $62.33. It was mostly fresh organic produce, as we are trying to eat as many fruits and veggies as possible, but I did have a few finds. The Always Pads were FREE, as I got a coupon for a free pack when I requested a free sample. The Cinnamon Cheerios were $1.18 with sale and coupon, and the clementines were $2.99 with coupon.

My best find this week: 6 cartons of lower sodium chicken broth at Target, on clearance for $0.46 each! They brought my grocery total to $65 for the week. The all expire in 2012, so a great deal!

Consignment store find: a Gap spring coat in 18M size for $10. To be put away for my daughter for later.

My son needed summer clothes in size 3T and a new pair of shoes. I used a Target gift card to get the shoes, a pair of jeans, and three pairs of shorts, and paid $6 out of pocket. The consignment shop, Once Upon A Child, got us 5 T-shirts, 2 long sleeve T-shirts, and 3 pairs of jean shorts for $41. We are now set until next spring, for only $47! Most were Gymboree, Children's Place, and Old Navy. I'm not buying pajamas, as he is happy to wear Daddy's old T-shirts to bed.

CSN Stores Giveaway

Today is my birthday! We just spent 4 days in the hospital with our newborn daughter, who was having breathing difficulties after contracting RSV. She finally came home yesterday- the perfect birthday present!

It's still snowing out here, but spring is just around the corner. That means more outdoor time- and it means I need to start planning for my outdoor projects.

I'd love to help my readers with their spring projects- and I have a $20 online gift certificate from CSN Stores to give away for a little spring shopping. Are you planning on putting up backyard swing sets? Looking for a fire pit? Or are you working on an indoor project and need new bedding or towels? You can use this gift certificate for just about anything.

As for me, I'd like to focus on container gardening with bee-friendly plants and herbs for my kitchen ( you can freeze herbs you grow in summer to use next winter).

You can get up to three chances to win:
1) Leave a comment on this post telling me what spring project you will be working on.
2) Follow me in Google Friend Connect.
3) Write a blog post about this contest and link back to this post.

This contest will close on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17th, at 5PM.

The rules: Please be sure to leave a comment with each entry and a valid email address. This is open to US and Canadian readers only. Please be sure to note that not all items in CSN stores ship for free, though those priced over $70 often do. You will be responsible for shipping yourself.
