Veggie Salad, Quesadilla, Falafel, and Shopping Trip Pics

Last night's dinner, a Loaded Vegetable Salad that is on the menu for next week, but looked so darn good, I just craved it last night. I added kalamata olives and parmesan, and we used a Garlic Expression dressing we already had. This was served with Onion and Cheese Quesadillas, with a dollop of guacamole leftover from my son's birthday party, and corn on the cob seasoned with Lawry's Seasoned Salt. Soooo yummy!

We tried this (poorly photographed) Creamy Chicken and Rice Soup. The chicken was from a chicken stock I made in the slow cooker the previous day. I ate two bowls, and it was OK. I didn't care for the taste of the evaporated milk, and added some Lawry's. I think if I make it again, I'll either use real cream or milk.

My beloved Falafel with Cucumber Dill Sauce. This really is economical, and I'd say we get 4 servings with this. I'm having leftovers of this for lunch today. A can of sale-priced chickpeas is generally $0.89. Total for 4 servings will be less than $5. I prefer mine unwrapped, but you can eat it in a tortilla or pita.

A casserole experiment for Mother's Day brunch. It was good, but I did modify it. I added Lawry's, garlic powder, pepper, and dried ground mustard to the egg mixture. I also cooked the onions with the sausage.

My free Kraft sampler pack. The only issue I've had is finding the regional Bull's Eye sauce- it isn't at my local Kroger or Meijer.

Huggies pull-up sample. Tried it yesterday, and it did NOT contain our son's poop-splosion. Back to cloth!

Last week's CVS freebies. Um, my box of toothpaste and toothbrushes is overflowing (12?), even though the St Vincent's box is loaded as well. I think we are covered for 32 weeks of shaving for my husband, including the freebie I will get this week. All for nothing!

JC Penney $10 off $10 coupons. A size 3T jacket for next year that was on clearance (was $35). I paid $2 out of pocket. Also, a toddler sized outdoor chair in carrying case (I paid a couple bucks). Free knickers from Lane Bryant.

CVS deal from last week. Free toothpaste, pantyliners, tampons, and 2 Right Guards. Chocolate bars were $1 each and 3rd and 4th Right Guards were $1 each, I believe.

Last week's Target finds: pantyliners for free, double-pack of Suave for free, GE reveal and one CFL lightbulb for free, CFL lightbulb pack for $3ish?, Strawberry Shortcake band-aids for $0.77 each, Nexcare band-aids for $2, Mitchum for $0.99, and Degree for $0.49 each.

Free Uncle Ben's and Butt Paste for $2.99 at Kroger.

Free nivea for Women and Bic pens at Walmart, and Old El Paso Taco Shells for $0.70 each, and Nivea for Men for $1.99.

Target from 3 weeks ago: Seventh Generation for $0.79 each, Dove deodorant for $0.99, two Lea and Perrins for $0.45 each, two Tazo teas for $1.50. A free Johnson's Bath Buddy (though pay attention to the newer coupons, as they will exclude the Bath Buddy's and trial sizes.)

Weekend Deal Roundup

Walgreens weekly deals here. I plan on getting two 36-count boxes of Poise pantyliners for FREE (yes, post pregnancy pelvic floor weakness and neuro-caused bladder spasms, life is a dream, ain't it?), and two Old Spice body washes for FREE (St Vincent de Paul box), and hefty One-Zip bags for $1.15 each. I use this link as a guide for using Walgreen's Register Rewards.

FREE Bayer aspirin at Walgreens as well. If I can become pregnant, I will have to take aspirin through the entire pregnancy, so I will stock up. If it never comes to pass, I will pass it on. If that special man in your life is willing to dye his gray hair, you can get Just For Men for FREE this week as well. As far as Mr S goes, it will be a cold day in Hades!

25 FREE photo prints at Walgreens.

CVS deals are here. I'm getting a Blade 5 Razor System for FREE and two Herbal Essences Shampoos for FREE. Also, Zantac 150 24-ct for $2.99. If you print the coupon on the Zantac website ($3 off) you are also entered into a sweepstakes for a 7-day trip to a Man Vs. Food featured city. I have ECBs to use, so will essentially be nothing out of pocket.

Never used Extra Care Bucks at CVS before? There is a good explanation here. I am just now starting to do this regularly, and it's not that difficult. If you think being forced to spend those "dollars" you get back at CVS is a waste, consider all the things your family regularly needs that you have to buy anyway- toilet paper, diapers, Tylenol, Kleenex? This applies to Walgreens too. I use my ECBs to buy items that earn me more ECBs, so I never have to outlay more money from my own pocket, and my family (and the local homeless shelter) gets things they need for free.

Money Saving Mom has a great scenario for using all those great Huggies coupons out there to get 7 packs of Huggies diapers for $5.12 each shipped from Did I mention that we use cloth? It is more economical, though requires a bit more work.

If you are in the market for a car seat, has 20% off Britax carseats. We have one and we are very happy with it.

Get 5 FREE Disney Movie Rewards points.

Walmart deals here. Cesar dog food for $0.25 each, Tide for $3.97 each, Listerine $2 for 1.5L bottle.

Target deals here. GE Reveal CFL light bulbs are $3.49 after stacked coupons. Usually they are
$5.49. These last a looong time. DiGiorno Pizza For One $1.50 after coupons (though I will add, making your own pizza at home is cheaper). Pledge products as low as $0.83 when you buy three.

Meijer deals here. I plan on getting blackberries and avocados for $1 each, Cheerios for $0.99, A1 sauce for $0.50 (for use in this great slow cooker recipe), Kraft Mayo for $1, and Kraft dressing for FREE.

Kroger deals here. Our pantry is very well-stocked already. I'll be getting Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage for $2 each when you buy two (Mr S loved Pierogies and sausage), watermelon 2 for $4, Kroger cheese, one pack at $1.50 (running low), Green Giant Veggies at $0.55 wyb three, ALL detergent for $0.99 (if they have free and HE at our Kroger), Dove deodorant for $0.50.

I won't be getting these, but you can also get Oscar Meyer Lunchables for FREE and bologna for $0/48 each wyb two of them.

Friday, May 14, 2010

Want To Win A Blog Giveaway?

Today is our 4th wedding anniversary- and I received a wonderful gift. I just found out I won The Football Wife's $200 Visa Gift Card blog giveaway! This equates to a month's worth of groceries in our house!

Thank you Football Wife!

Last month, I also won a Flirty Apron at Katydid and the Kid.

Interested in winning a blog giveaway too?

Blogs, and I include myself among them, will often give away a prize in order to gain more readership. Following a blog in a reader, on Twitter, or on Facebook, will gain you extra chances to win. Find a smaller blog giveaway, where the readership is less, and you have a better chance of winning. However, even a larger blog that garners 400 comments on a giveaway post still leaves you with a better chance of winning than the average lottery ticket.

If you follow Katydid and the Kid, she generally has a weekly blog giveaway roundup. Review sites, like All Thumbs (shared by my friend Lori), will often have products to give away. I once won a book about postpartum fitness on All Thumbs, after my son was born.

The BlogHer network, because of its generous advertisers, frequently advertises giveaways for its ad network members. (My main blog, Mrs Spock, is an ad network member.) Sometimes BlogHer will partner with one of its bloggers to create an extra special giveaway, like a trip to New York or larger cash prize.

Be sure, if you are entering any giveaway, that there are clear rules concerning the prize. Are you responsible for shipping? It's not kosher to expect you to pay for shipping, if it was not mentioned up front. I have never expected a recipient to pay for their own shipping for one of my giveaways. How is the winner chosen? What is the cut-off date? Is it open to US and/or mainland residents only?

Remember, as well, that if you win, you will be giving a stranger your home address. If you wouldn't feel comfortable giving this person your name and address, it is better not to enter in the first place. Giveaways sponsored by legitimate organizations, such as the BlogHer network, are safer in this regards.

Always be sure to leave a valid email address, as this will be the main means to contact you. Give an email address that you check fairly often. Some giveaways will default to the runner-up if you don't respond within a set time-frame.

Don't forget, if you are a US resident, Uncle Sam gets his due. Even for non-cash prizes, you are taxed on the fair market value of the item. So my $200 Visa card ain't really $200- but it's more than zero.
